Product Questions

What is oolong tea?

Oolong tea is a partially oxidized tea ranging from 8%-85% oxidation (green tea is 0% and black tea is 100%). Different styles of oolong tea can vary widely in flavor. They can be sweet and fruity with honey aromas, or woody and thick with roasted aromas, or green and fresh with complex aromas, all depending on the terroir, cultivar, and craftsmanship. Jade Oolong Tea is our #1 best seller and great for someone who is new to oolong tea.

What are your green tea options?

We offer Jasmine Green Tea, BiLuoChun Green Tea, Matcha Powder and Hojicha Powder (roasted green tea powder). Additionally, we offer a PouChong Green Oolong, which is a lightly oxidized oolong that has a green tea profile and rich floral aroma.

What are your black tea options?

We offer Honey Black Tea and Ruby Black Tea. Additionally, our Oriental Beauty tea is a highly oxidized oolong (85%) that has a black tea profile and fruity aroma.

Will the tea keep me up all night?

Aside from the type of tea, the quality and steep time are key factors determining whether a tea will keep you up or not. Lower quality tea with broken leaves (as seen in tea bags) usually releases more caffeine than handpicked high quality tea. Of course, the longer you steep the tea, the more caffeine is extracted as well. If you are trying a tea for the first time, we recommend enjoying it in the morning or noon time after meal, and gradually start drinking it later during the day.

Do you offer any decaf teas?

Yes, we do offer 100% decaf teas: Hibiscus Tea and Chamomile Tea. They are made of 100% organic botanicals and do not contain any loose leaf tea base.

Brewing Questions

How much tea should I use?

Everyone's teapot size is different. Generally, we recommend filling the bottom of your teapot with a thin layer of tea leaf. If the tea turns out too light, feel free to add more tea leaves. If the tea turns out too strong, feel free to use less tea leaves. If you want to be very precise, we recommend a 1:50 tea-to-water ratio (e.g. 7g tea for 350mL of hot water)

How long should I steep the tea for?

Everyone's preferred strength and teaware may vary. We recommend a shorter brew time for green tea and black tea as astringency may occur during an overly long steep. Oolong teas can be steeped up to 5 minutes in a medium size (350mL) teapot.

What temperature should the water be?

Green Tea: 185°F

Oolong Tea: 210-212°F

Black Tea: 210-212°F

Herbal Tea: 210-212°F

Matcha/Hojicha: 180°F

How do I make an iced tea?

A general rule is to make a strong concentrate and pour it over a cup of ice. To make a strong concentrate, simply steep the tea for 6 minutes and pour it out.

Do I need to add sugar to the tea?

While this is up to your personal preference, we strongly recommend trying our tea without sugar, as they all have a hint of natural sweetness and are not bitter at all.
